这首歌就是为Christopher McCandless的传奇故事（电影《Into the Wild》根据真实事件改编）所作，Christopher是一个纯粹的理想主义者，作为Emory University（埃默里大学）的尖子生，出于对社会的厌恶毅然放弃学业和自己全部积蓄，只身一人穿越美国开始了一场寻找自我的艰辛旅程，一路上他遇到了形形色色的旅行者和绝美纯粹的自然之景，最后他在阿拉斯加的丛林中死于饥饿。
每一个文艺青年都有一段憎恶社会的成长经历，每一个文艺青年心中都有自己的流浪英雄和公路电影，但这部电影的意义并不是让你我他看完电影后就放弃学业和工作只身一人走上穷游之路，所谓的追求自由恐怕是最大的误读了。
大自然中所有生命都是值得尊重的，尊重彼此上升到生命的高度，抛开社会的地位与金钱及道德的尊严与荣耀，也许这才是Christopher深入自然深处所追寻的意义，与其说他憎恶这个社会，不如说他是深爱着这个世界的，引用豆瓣网友的话“城市是个小牢笼，荒野之外才是真正的世界”。
我们每天奔忙于虚拟的社会规则中，努力赚取使我们获得幸福感虚拟货币，正如歌中所唱希望我们不要做生活的囚徒，也许真正生命的价值和意义只有置身于大自然的荒野之中，才会有更深刻的体会和感动。
